CONNECTIONS

The region of Central and Southeast Europe still has remarkable similarities in national cultural strategies, museum and heritage legislations, museum professionals` education, even in the transformation of museums methodologies and approaches in last three decades.

The region of Central and Southeast Europe still has remarkable similarities in national cultural strategies, museum and heritage legislations, museum professionals` education, even in the transformation of museums methodologies and approaches in last three decades. The reason lies in the fact that theoretical approach to museology was born here some half century ago and been strongly influenced by museum thinkers like Zbynjek Stranski (Czechoslovakia), Vojciech Gluzinski (Poland) and Ivo Maroevic (Croatia, Yugloslavia). These thinkers and philosophy belong to museum/museology heritage of the region, yet the contemporary thinking is still colored by their influence. The ICOFOMs` Dictionary of Museology (2022) recognizes this approach as one of five relevant definitions of contemporary museology.

The question now is: Is there a possibility for new perspectives on these thoughts? Could they be transferred in contemporary museum and heritage practice and industries? Could they be transformed in the useful corpus of knowledge in contemporary notion of education?…

The goals

The primary goal of this Conference (and those which are planned to happen in 2026 – Brno, and 2027 – Krakow) is to connect teachers and researchers, MA and Ph.D. students, as well as practitioners through the data-based web-portal of the relevant publications, articles and practices, and exchange the ideas and plans on future development of the discipline. Also, the goal is to provide deeper insights into each university representatives` academic production, reference options and accessibility to publications.

After the establishment of the personal and knowledge based interconnections, the door is open for more formal collaboration between departments, faculties and even universities. Formal network could open up the space for more synchronized syllabuses and programs, more profound and sustainable exchange of teachers and, more important, mobility of students of each level of studying.

The deliverables of the 2025 Conference in Belgrade are:

  • Prior to the Conference: Book of Abstracts
  • For the Conference: online Proceedings
  • After the Conference: the scientific publication (selected papers) from the Conference presentations.

Context

The Conference in Belgrade is the first international one of three planned in next 3 years: 2026 is a centennial of the Stranski birth and to be organized in Brno (Czechia), 2027 is to be held in Krakow (Poland) and dedicated to a decade after Gluzinski passed away. It is also 90 years of birth and 20 years after the death of Croatian Ivo Maroevic.

Themes

Brief is just a navigation, doesn`t need to direct any of the participants to any way of thinking or constructing the knowledge.

  • For the museology experts

(By invitation – “cluster of experts”):

Heritage of Museology Knowledge of CE and SEE

Brief: What is the heritage of museology in Central and Southeast Europe? Who are the key-figures and how this heritage could be interpreted and transformed into contemporary science field? Is there museology on its own?

Current Thinking: CE/SEE – “Who are those museologists” (now)?

Brief: Where is the region in global thinking now? What could be its recognizable advantages? What are we thinking of museology today? Or there are local museologies? Is there a space for specific (regional) expression, or we are the part of global community?  Who are we – the identities of museologists?

  • For the museum and museum-like institutions and organizations,

(By open call, invitation or recommendation)

Current Thinking on Doing: The step-forward initiatives

Brief: Are there any theories to be applied? What ideas are we following? Are there specific museum / heritage practices for the area? How much space is there for innovation? In what areas? The strength of professionals or power of participation? Is our practice extending continuously?

  • For the MA and Ph.D. students:

(By open call or recommendation)

Overcoming the gaps – new lenses

Brief: “Don`t look up!” Are we in the wrong field, and why aren`t we? Where are we looking at? What are we looking for? Are we networked? What do I see differently? Breaking up with traditions or making new ones?

Clusster of Experts

Its primary aim is clustering the professors and researchers of 7 universities and MA and PhD students in more formal network:

  • Jagiellonian University Krakow and its 2 Institutes that have programs in the museum field –
  • Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, Stanisława Trebunia-Staszel, Head of Postgraduate program of Museum Studies at Cathedra of Heritage and Theory of Museology
  • Institute of International and Political Studies), Katarzyna Jagodzinska, Department of Society and Cultural Heritage of Europe
  • Charles University, Prague (Faculty of Arts), Professors: Michal Stehlík, Pavel Douša
  • Comenius University Bratislava (Department of Archive Studies and Museology), Professors: Jan Dolak, L`uboš Kačirek, Lenka Vergova
  • University of Applied Arts in Vienna (Expanded Museum Studies, MA programme), Julienne Lorz (Head of the Department)
  • University of Ljubljana (Faculty of Arts), Professors: Verena Vidrih Perko, Jelka Pirkovič
  • University of Zagreb (Faculty of Arts: The Department for Information and Communication sciences,) Helena Stublić (Head of the Department), Darko Babić (Chair of Museology and Heritage Management), Željka Miklošević
  • University of Belgrade, Faculty of Philosophy (Art History Department, Center for Museology and Heritology), Professors: Milan Popadić, Milica Božić Marojević (Head of the Center for Museology and Heritology), Nikola Krstović.

As is obvious immediately, the museology and museum studies are based in different “basic” disciplines across the region – these positions provide the interdisciplinary approach in joint endeavor.
